However, no one can actually know what happened in the story or what the author wanted readers to think happened. Because Filiberto is dead, it is easy to believe Chac Mool came to life and drowned him. I think Jana summed up the idea of the story very well. I think I finally understand how to work this blasted blog thing. (I posted this first as a comment under Stephanie becasue I was confused, I blame the cold medicine, so please disregard that comment. This type of writing often leaves the reader confused, trying to sort out where reality ends and fantasy begins. This story like many of Fuentes' other stories blends reality with fantasy. It was necessary for Fuentes to begin with a story based in reality, and then weave a mythical story within it to get the effect he wanted. The story plays with your mind, whether or not you believe it is up to you but the story never changes. Believing is a major theme of this story. Who would believe Filiberto's story if he was not dead? It is pretty hard to believe even though he is dead. Earlier on in the story Filiberto is talking about religion with his friend Pepe and he says,"And that's what Mexico is all about: you have to kill a man in order to believe him." This ends up being true for Filiberto. The reader is trying to decide what to believe. Filiberto thinks he is going mad when the statue of Chac Mool is coming alive, as he struggles to define what is reality. The narrator is trying to make sense of his friends seemingly crazy notes and piece together the clues about his death. Fuentes weaves his story in magical realism leaving all people involved with the story trying to sort out what's what. There is a little mystery concerning the death of Filiberto, but the reader thinks more along the lines of a bad judgement call rather than a small Mexican Indian idol coming to life and drowning Filiberto. Fuentes begins with a relatively normal story of a man going to collect his recently deceased friend's body from Acapulco. This strange mythical story seems to come out of nowhere.
